R40 accident: Scene cleared after fatal crash

South bound vehicles still moving slow as traffic cops give directions.

The scene of the accident in which a cash-in-transit (CIT) vehicle rammed the back of an articulated truck in Mbombela has been cleared.

The accident occurred on the R40 between Riverside Mall and WeBuyCars Mbombela shortly before 06:00 today, April 8. Both the CIT vehicle and the truck were travelling from Rocky’s Drift towards Mbombela.

The road was immediately closed while authorities attended to the scene.

One of the CIT vehicle’s occupants died on impact, while the driver and another occupant who was in the back sustained serious injuries. They were rushed to hospital for further treatment.

The truck driver escaped the accident uninjured.

The deceased’s name has not yet been released pending the information reaching his next of kin.

The provincial Department of Community Safety, Security and Liaison’s spokesperson, Moeti Mmusi, said investigations are under way.

“The exact cause of the accident is still unknown at this time,” said Mmusi.
