Severe weather warning: Thunderstorms and fire danger predicted for SA – Here’s what you need to know

SAWS issued yellow 2 warnings for thunderstorms and fire danger in multiple provinces.

The South African Weather Service (SAWS) has issued a yellow level 4 warning for severe thunderstorms accompanied by heavy downpours.

According to SAWS, damaging winds, excessive lightning, and large amounts of small hail are expected, which could result in localised flooding of susceptible roads, low-lying areas, and bridges.

Minor vehicle accidents and localised damage to infrastructure, informal settlements, property, vehicles, livelihoods, agricultural production, and livestock are also anticipated across KZN tomorrow, October 12.

SAWS has also issued a yellow level 2 warning for severe weather in Mpumalanga.

“Severe thunderstorms with heavy downpours, damaging winds, excessive lightning, and large amounts of small or large hail over open areas, resulting in localised flooding and damage to settlements and infrastructure, are expected over the south-eastern Highveld of Mpumalanga.”

Fire danger warnings:

Extremely high fire danger is expected over the Kagisano-Molopo Local Municipality of North West, and the extreme northern parts of Limpopo.

Gauteng:

Cloudy and cool to warm, with isolated showers and thundershowers expected.
The expected UVB sunburn index is low.

Mpumalanga:

Cloudy and warm with isolated to scattered showers and thundershowers, except in the northern Lowveld. It will be partly cloudy and hot to very hot in the Lowveld.

Limpopo:

Partly cloudy and warm to hot, with isolated showers and thundershowers expected in the south. It will be very hot in places over the Lowveld, Limpopo Valley, and Western Bushveld.

North West:

Partly cloudy and warm to hot, with isolated showers and thundershowers.

Free State:

Partly cloudy and cool to warm, with isolated to scattered showers and thundershowers.

Northern Cape:

Morning fog along the coast, otherwise partly cloudy and warm, with isolated showers and thundershowers in the east.
The wind along the coast will be a moderate southerly.

Western Cape:

Morning fog in places, otherwise partly cloudy and cool to warm. It will be cloudy in the east, with isolated showers and thundershowers in the extreme north-east. The wind along the coast will be moderate to fresh south-easterly in the south-west, otherwise light to moderate.
The expected UVB sunburn index is very high.

Western half of the Eastern Cape:

Cloudy and cool, with scattered showers and thundershowers.
The wind along the coast will be light and variable west of Algoa Bay in the early morning, otherwise light to moderate easterly, becoming moderate to fresh north-easterly from the evening.

Eastern half of the Eastern Cape:

Cloudy and cool, with widespread showers and thundershowers.
The wind along the coast will be moderate to fresh south-easterly, becoming moderate to fresh north-easterly in the south from the evening.

KZN:

Morning fog over the interior, otherwise cloudy with scattered showers and thundershowers. It will be cool, with widespread showers in the south.
The wind along the coast will be light to moderate easterly to north-easterly in the extreme north, otherwise light to moderate southerly to south-westerly.
The expected UVB sunburn index is moderate.
