Sekhukhune United to face Orlando Pirates in cup final
Sekhukhune United defeated Stellenbosch FC 4-3 on penalties following a 0-0 draw in a semifinal at the Danie Craven (Stellenbosch) Stadium on Sunday night.
In their second season after gaining promotion to the DStv Premiership, Sekhukhune United will compete for a
major trophy after advancing to the Nedbank Cup finals.
Sekhukhune United defeated Stellenbosch FC 4-3 on penalties following a 0-0 draw in a semifinal at the Danie Craven (Stellenbosch) Stadium on Sunday night.
The win saw Babina Noko reach the Nedbank Cup final for the first time in the club’s history. They will now take on Orlando Pirates at Loftus Versfeld Stadium in Pretoria on May 27.
The Pirates booked their spot after defeating their archrivals Kaizer Chiefs 2-1 on Saturday. Babina Noko’s win also see them likely to qualify for the Caf Confederations Cup next season.
Brandon Truter said playing in Africa is a possibility, although their focus is now on the Pirates in the league in the next match
on Saturday.
“We have Pirates next week in the league, so yeah, excitement, a first for the club as well. I think also if Pirates finish second in the league, this takes us to Africa. So, it’s a lot to play for still. We have to refocus and focus on the league. We are in the top eight, but it’s not secured yet. It’s about refocusing now and looking forward to our next league game,” he said.
Sekhukhune’s hero of the night was substitute goalkeeper Ntokozo Mtsweni, as he saved two spot kicks during the shoot-out.
Meanwhile, the political leadership in Fetakgomo Tubatse Local Municipality and Sekhukhune District Municipality has congratulated Babina Noko for their achievements.
Sekhukhune United is owned by the Malatji brothers, Simon and Jonas, who originally hail from Ga-Motshana, just outside Burgersfort.
