Lowveld holds its first rugby and music festival

Nine teams, a mixture of clubs and schools, recently took part in this 10s rugby tournament at Mbombela Stadium.

The Lowveld’s 2024 rugby season is in full swing!

On October 21, in the scorching heat, nine teams took place in the first-ever Lowveld Rugby and Music Festival at Mbombela Stadium.

“Everything was arranged with less than two months to go. We want to make it an annual event and hope to see more rugby teams in action next year, as well as more supporters cheering them on,” Tania Kapp, the event’s co-ordinator, said. She added they’ve already identified two possible dates on the calendar for next year and will announce them in due course.

There was also live entertainment on the day, thanks to the likes of Sorina Erasmus (‘die Flooze’), Coenie Naudé, Die Wit Darkies and the Moonshine Band. Food and beverage stalls lined the side of the rugby field as well, fuelling the rugby stars to give their best.

Both club teams and teams made up out of school players came head-to-head on the field. The school final was decided between Curro and the Barberton Rebels. Both teams gave their all, but at the end of the day only one could lift the trophy. Curro was crowned the first Lowveld Rugby and Music Festival 10s champions in this division after winning 33-12.

The main game of the day saw the Circufin Kudus and UXi Pumas teams go head to head. It was a low-scoring affair with the Kudus edging out the Pumas with 15 points to nil.
