Lowveld karatekas light up New World Shotokan nationals
The national women's champion in NWS Karate now hails from White River as Carien de Bruyn took the title.
The spirit of the Lowveld shone through the New World Shotokan (NWS) National Championships in Boksburg recently, as local karatekas showcased exceptional skill and dedication.
The Lowveld’s talent not only held their own against strong competition from provinces such as Gauteng, North West, and Western Cape, but they also helped propel Mpumalanga to an impressive second place in the overall points standings. Karatekas from Nelspruit, White River, Sabie, Hazyview and Skukuza dojos all took part in the nationals.
While the competition was the perfect showcase of discipline, power, and unwavering focus from all karatekas, for the Lowveld one shone brighter than the rest.
Carien de Bruyn from White River was awarded the coveted Shotokan Cup. This prestigious floating trophy recognises De Bruyn as the best woman fighter in South Africa within NWS Karate – a truly remarkable accomplishment that brings immense pride to the Lowveld karate community.
De Bruyn’s dedication and skills are honed at the White River Dojo, where she trains under the guidance of Sensei Piet Venter. Her victory is not just a personal triumph, but a testament to the high standards and vast potential within the Lowveld.

“The success of the Lowveld karatekas at the national championships serves as a powerful reminder of the many benefits that martial arts offer,” said Sensei Louw Venter of the Nelspruit Dojo.
“Beyond the competitive arena, the discipline, focus and self-confidence cultivated through karate are invaluable life skills. Perhaps these inspiring achievements will encourage others in the Lowveld, both young and old, to explore the enriching journey that karate offers.”
