Bi-turbo Mitsubishi Triton arriving soon along with ‘darker’ GLS

Mitsubishi Motors South Africa has announced imminent changes to the Triton range, the biggest being the long overdue arrival of the new twin-turbodiesel engine.

Blackened GLS

Soon to be added, the current 11 model line-up will be bolstered not only by the new engine, which will wear the bi-turbo designation, but a new aesthetic for the mid-range GLS.

In a statement, the three diamonds confirmed the GLS will benefit from metallic black 18-inch alloy wheels, blacked-out taillight clusters, black front and rear bumpers, darkened finishes for the fog lamp surrounds, side-steps, tailgate handle and door handles.

Upgraded safety spec

Depending on the trim level, the Triton’s array of safety and driver assistance systems will also be tweaked to include the following:

• front and rear parking sensors;
• Adaptive Cruise Control;
• Auto High Beam Assist;
• Forward Collision Mitigation;
• Lane Change Assist;
• Rear Cross Traffic Alert;
• Blind Spot Monitoring;
• Lane Departure Warning

Reserved for the bi-turbo only is a 360-degree surround-view camera system.

Setting itself from the rest of the range further, the twin-blown Triton also gets silver roof rails, an electrically opening tailgate, heated door mirrors and a style bar.

Bi-turbo detailed

Of bigger interest, though, is the second turbocharger bolted to the 4N16 2.4-litre D-ID diesel engine.

Outputting 135kW/430Nm in single turbo form, the inclusion of the second blower ups power and torque figures to 150kW/470Nm.

Unlike lesser trim grades of the single turbo, the bi-turbo will only be offered in double cab guise, and with the six-speed automatic gearbox instead of having the six-speed manual as an option.

Drive will also go to the rear or all four wheels as standard via the part-time SuperSelect four-wheel drive system.

Initially supposed to have gone on-sale last year, Mitsubishi Motor South Africa is yet to confirm a launch date and pricing for the revised Triton range.

At present, the line-up starts at R499 900 for the two-wheel drive GL single cab, and ends at R889 900 for the limited run double cab 4×4 Edition 46 equipped with the six-speed auto ‘box.

Given timing of the bi-turbo’s announcement, expect more details to emerge soon.
