ANC veteran murder accused denied bail

The veteran’s postmortem revealed she was suffocated to death and raped.

The man accused of the rape and murder of ANC veteran Hermina Mpakanyane was recently denied bail in the Benoni Magistrates’ Court.

The 86-year old was found dead at her home on Dube Street, Wattville, on October 13, Benoni City Times reported.

Ekurhuleni Central Cluster spokesperson Captain Nomsa Sekele said a tenant of Mpakanyane saw that the burglar bars of the window into Mpakanyane’s bedroom were tampered with.

“The tenant then went inside to see what was going on.

“The woman was found with a piece of cloth in her mouth and a scarf tied around her head covering the cloth.”

Mpakanyane’s postmortem revealed she was suffocated to death and raped.

The accused was arrested on May 18 at the Tambo Memorial Hospital.

He was at the hospital after he had been knocked down by a vehicle.

He will remain in custody for further investigations until his next appearance on August 7.
