Politicians do their bit for #MandelaDay

Ramaphosa will hand over the Ramadimetja Sophia Mogotlane Early Childhood Development Centre in Limpopo.

Today marks Mandela Day, the day on which the first democratically elected president was born in 1918, and a number of events have been scheduled that will involve politicians.

Deputy President Cyril Ramaphosa will officially hand over the Ramadimetja Sophia Mogotlane Early Childhood Development (ECD) Centre to the Mookgophong community in Limpopo.

The ECD came into being as a result of a call by Ramaphosa on World TB Day for the creation of early childhood development facilities in needy areas.

President Jacob Zuma has called on everyone to use the day to take up the fight against poverty.

“Too many of our people live in poverty in spite of progress that government is making,” said Zuma.

Speaker of the National Assembly Baleka Mbete is expected to spend the day with the elderly in Ekurhuleni, while Human Settlements Minister Lindiwe Sisulu will be handing over houses and interacting with community members at Chatty 491 Military Veterans project in Port Elizabeth.

DA leader Mmusi Maimane will commemorate the day by visiting Tumelo Home for the Mentally Handicapped in Ivory Park.
