Prisoners in transit overpower police and escape in KZN

Motorists and residents in the Vryheid region are urged to exercise caution, as the prisoners are armed and dangerous.

Zululand cluster communications officer Captain Nkosie Gwala has confirmed that a police vehicle carrying prisoners from Vryheid to Nongoma was hijacked on Monday morning, reports Vryheid Herald.

Initial reports from the scene indicate that two prisoners overpowered the two police officers responsible for the transportation, taking their firearms and cellphones.

Some of the prisoners are believed to have been taken along with the vehicle, while other prisoners allegedly escaped into the surrounding bushes.

The station commander at SAPS Nongoma, Brigadier James Luvuno, was on his way to the scene to assess the situation.

Motorists and residents were urged to exercise caution as the prisoners should be considered armed and dangerous.

This is a developing story and will be updated as more information becomes available.
