A mayoral committee reshuffle could be on the cards for the City of Johannesburg.

Patriotic Alliance (PA) president Gayton McKenzie has recommended Liam Jacobs to replace Kenny Kunene as MMC for Transport in the City of Johannesburg.
McKenzie said on social media that he had recommended Jacobs to Johannesburg Mayor Dada Morero.
“The party is deploying Liam Jacobs as the new councillor for the PA in the City of Joburg. He will be our new deployee by the party to replace leader Kenny Kunene in council.
“We want him to get experience and to help us fix the potholes and to continue the good work that the DP has been doing,” he said.

McKenzie said this deployment will give Jacobs a chance to show his skills.
“This is your chance now to show people that you can lead. You have shown people your heart. Do not disappoint them. This is your moment, congratulations Liam,” he said.
Five things to know about Liam Jacobs
- The 24-year-old Jacobs was appointed to parliament after the 2024 general elections, he served in the Portfolio Committee on Sports, arts and Culture.
- He holds an honours degree in politics, economics, and philosophy from the University of Pretoria, where he joined the DA student structures.
- Jacobs led the DA Student Organisation (DASO) from October 2022 until joining the DA in June 2025.
- Before leaving the DA, he had a clash with McKenzie in a committee meeting, but he later said he felt used in the DA.
- He was born in 2001 in the town of Kimberly in the Northern Cape, where he is known for his community activism.
Despite McKenzie’s recommendation, it is the mayor’s prerogative to appoint members of his mayoral committee.
There are two vacancies in the mayoral committee: the finance MMC and transport MMC positions.
Morero is expected to fill these two positions after consultations with his coalition partners.

Kenny Kunene ‘is fine’
Meanwhile, McKenzie said Kunene is doing well despite criticism that he is facing for his alleged connection with a suspect who was arrested in connection with the murder of DJ Sumbody.
Kunene was found at the suspect’s house last week during a police raid. He claimed he was only there to help a reporter get a story.
“I want to say to you we will be very transparent with the thing of the DP. He is fine and thank you for all the messages that you have been sending to our deputy president,” McKenzie said.
