‘Too many vowels’: DA’s JP Smith lambasted for comments on MC’s surname

The DA member went on to say: 'You need a short, compact one like me, Smith.'

The Democratic Alliance’s (DA’s) mayoral committee member for safety and security JP Smith left Twitter users furious after he tried to crack a joke about the surname of Cape Talk radio host Abongile Nzelenzele.

After Nzelenzele called Smith to the podium, the DA member said, “To our MC Abongile, I’m not even going to try that surname dude. There’s too many vowels, too awkwardly placed.”

Smith didn’t stop there, though. He went on to say: “You need a short, compact one like me, Smith.”

Political analyst Eusebius McKaizer shared the clip on Twitter and his followers struggled to find the humour in Smith’s remarks.

Clearly not aware of the awkward situation he had already created, Smith added salt to the wound.

“I’ll go out and look for you on social media and I’ll add myself to your followers. That will be a 4% increase in your fanbase.”
