The sound of red leather crashing off premium willow is just one of the thrills of the upcoming North West High Schools Cricket League that starts in earnest this Saturday, 18 August.
Four leagues will see a total of 42 teams from 18 schools across the province battle for cricketing supremacy. Naturally, the u.19 A Super League will be the biggest talking point as the province’s top sides will go all out for the coveted trophy. Hoër Volkskool Potchefstroom, Potchefstroom Gimnasium, Lichtenburg High School, Klerksdorp High School, Rustenburg High School and Wesvalia High School will compete for top honours in this league.
The Potchefstroom teams boast bucket loads of talent in their respective elevens and will once again be the teams to beat this season. Volkskool Potchefstroom are the defending champions after they completed a narrow 1- wicket win against Gimnasium in last year’s final on home soil. Martin Fourie will lead Volkskool as captain this year and he hopes to lead from the front with bat in hand. Gimnasium, on the other hand, will once again look to bring the trophy home with the talented twins, Duan and Marco Jansen, always a threat with both bat and ball.
Both Potchefstroom sides will start the league with away trips. Volkskool will take on Rustenburg at Olympia Park, while Gimnasium will take on familiar foes KHS in Klerksdorp.
In the B division, Potchefstroom Boys High and THS Potchefstroom will lock horns during the season in Pool A, while Ferdinand Postma will look to shine in Pool B alongside Matlosana, Schoonspruit, Wolmaranstad and Potchefstroom Gimnasium’s third team.
Two fixtures to take note of in the group phase this season Volkskool taking on Gimnasium on 1 September at Volkskool, and Potchefstroom Boys High taking on THS Potchefstroom in another derby match at Boys High on 8 September. This promises to be a cracking encounter.
