SA Proteas women all-rounder, Marizanne Kapp, put in a fine all-round performance to take SA to a 30-run win by means of Duckworth/Lewis (D/L) in a rain affected 2nd WODI against Sri-Lanka at Senwes Park.
Kapp hit a defiant and swashbuckling 69* (34) which included 6 fours and 4 sixes to take her team to a competitive 268/7 in their 50 overs.
Laura Wolvaardt also assited Kapp with a fine 64 at the top of the order, but it was Kapp who gave her side the momentum heading into the break.
The SA bowlers struggled at first to contain Sri Lankan captain and opener, Chamari Athapathu who smashed (94 off 78). She gave her team hope, but when stand in captain, Suné Luus got her wicket, things began to turn SA’s way.
Kapp impressed with 2/41 with the ball, whilst Luus (1/38) and Shabnim Ismael (1/26) also bowled miserly spells to restrict Sri Lanka to 231 all out. It also did not help Sri Lanka’s cause that they had 4 run-outs in their innings.
The third WODI will once again take place at Senwes Park this Sunday, 17 February at 10:00.
