NWU Eagles fly high with individual Varsity Cup awards

Ricardo Fourie and Matthew Fortuin scooped top awards as the best forward and back of the competition respectively.

The NWU Eagles can be proud of two of their standout players who won the Forward that Rocks and Back that Rocks awards at the conclusion of the 2026 Varsity Cup season.

Ricardo Fourie was voted as the best forward of the competition, while Matthew Fortuin won the most votes in the best back of the competition-category. This was also the second year in a row that Fortuin managed this achievement.

Varsity Cup coaches could nominate the players and those with the most nominations, in the top three of respective categories, could then be in the running to be nominated by the public.

It was a bittersweet moment for the two outstanding players, who received their awards shortly after losing by 31-3 to Tuks in the Varsity Cup final on Monday, April 13.

Although the NWU could not gain the overall Varsity Cup glory, these two talented rugby players showcased their worth throughout the season with gritty and dazzling displays.

Fourie, a blindside flanker, was one of the NWU’s main assets at the breakdown as a ball winner in the rucks. He was also energetic on attack and defence and racked up player of the match awards on a consistent basis.

“It is a great honour to win this award. I can only thank my coaches and my teammates who helped me achieve it. It means a lot to win, but it means even more to have been nominated in the first place. The coaches determine this and it shows that they noticed me throughout the tournament,” stated Fourie.

Fortuin was an attacking threat on outside centre, carving defences open and creating space for other try scorers. He added an imposing presence in the backline with solid defence.

“Personally, the award means a lot to me, but I don’t see it as something I achieved on my own. It is only possible thanks to my incredible teammates and coaches who invest so much time and effort in us. My family and my girlfriend are always there to support and motivate me through everything.”

“Above all, I am grateful to my Lord and Saviour, Jesus Christ, for the opportunities and the ability He gives me to be able to play.”

“This is an unbelievable achievement for both players. It is also the second time in a row for Matthew. It made a difficult evening, (loss in the final) a bit better,” added NWU Eagles head coach, Burger van der Westhuizen.
