Murderer receives 40 years jail sentence

The accused and two other suspects opened fire at three security guards, one suspect was killed while the third managed to escape.

THE Durban Regional Court sentenced Sabelo Lungelo Mthembu to 40 years imprisonment for business robbery, murder and two counts of attempted murder recently.

Mthembu  attacked three security guards at the SJ Smith Hostel in Jacobs in 2023. He and two accomplices tried to rob a store at the hostel, however, the observant security guards thwarted their actions.

According to the investigating officer, Sergeant Bhekumuzi Dlamini, Mthembu and two other suspects opened fire at the three security guards.

“There was an exchange of fire between the suspects and the security guards. One suspect was shot dead, Mthembu was arrested on the scene while the other escaped.

“One security guard was seriously injured and taken to Prince Mshiyeni Memorial Hospital,” said Dlamini.

Mthembu was detained at the Montclair police station until his first court appearance. The docket was assigned to Sergeant Dlamini for further investigation.

“He had been appearing at the Durban Regional Court until his case was finalised. His application for bail was not successful as he was facing serious charges,” said Dlamini.

In another conviction, Njabulo Ncayiyana was sentenced to 10 years imprisonment for the murder of his friend in September 2023.

According to the information presented in court, Ncayiyana had been drinking with his friends at the SJ Smith Hostel when an altercation broke out among them.

“Ncayiyana pulled a knife and stabbed the victim on the neck. The man was rushed to Clairwood Hospital where he died upon arrival. The matter was reported at the Montclair police station.

“The police launched an investigation, and acting on information received from sources, tracked Ncayiyana to Glebelands Men’s Hostel in uMlazi, where he was hiding. He was arrested and taken to Montclair police station.

“He had been appearing at the Durban Regional Court until his case was finalised,” Dlamini added.
