Sails to fight out Lady’s Slipper

Two-year-old fillies are in spotlight at Fairview today when they contest the Listed Lady’s Slipper Stakes over 1400m on the turf track.

If the form works out the race should give top-of-the-log jockey S’manga Khumalo another valuable winner as he is aboard Priceless Sail for the Yvette Bremner stable. The daughter of Sail From Seattle won a Juvenile Plate over the course and distance last time, beating Hollywood Sunset by a neck, with Artic Sails another 1.50 lengths back in third.

They all meet again at level weights and on that basis Priceless Sail should have the edge, especially with an in-form Khumalo on top. She is well enough drawn at No 6.

Artic Sails could be the biggest threat, despite the fact that Hollywood Sunset finished ahead of her. The Alan Greeff-trained runner proved most stubborn on the day and she may have blown her chances before even entering the starting stalls.

A run earlier she had Priceless Sail 4.25 lengths behind her in the East Cape Nursery but that was run over 1200m on the Polytrack. If she does not play up this time Artic Sails has to be a massive runner. She is drawn at No 1 and has Raymond Danielson aboard.

Clearly trainer Gavin Smith will fancy the chances of Hollywood Sunset if she can repeat her penultimate outing. The one concern is that she ran again after her second behind Priceless Sail. She was sent off a 13-10 favourite but faded to finish unplaced behind Conquering Queen. However, that race was over 1000m and she was found to be short behind.

She is drawn No 7 and if sound, must be considered a threat to the other two. Karl Zechner takes the ride for the first time.
