Egypt beat South Africa to hosting Afcon 2019

The Confederation of African Football has announced the host nation for the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations (Afcon).

President of Caf Ahmad Ahmad confirmed on Tuesday that Egypt will stage the 2019 continental tournament.

The new hosts were appointed after Cameroon were stripped off hosting rights due to preparation delays and security issues.

South Africa hosted the tournament in 2013 while Egypt hosted in 2006 and will get another a second chance to host.

Egypt and South Africa were the favourites to host the tournament after Morocco pulled out of the runnings in December. The competition will run from June 15 to July 13.

“Egypt will host the 2019 Total Africa Cup of Nations,” read a tweet from Caf.
