Goal-shy Sundowns looking to rediscover scoring touch

Sundowns were held to back-to-back goalless draws by Cape Town City and Swallows.

For a team that averages close to two goals per game in the DStv Premiership this season, it must come as a huge concern for Mamelodi Sundowns to have gone two games without finding the back of the net.

Sundowns were held to back-to-back goalless draws by Cape Town City and Swallows, and that has prompted Sundowns head coach Rulani Mokwena and his technical team to find solutions ahead of their tie against Golden Arrows this evening. This is according to midfielder Bongani Zungu.

“The team has gotten used to winning game after game and the last two games we did not win but there are positives such as not conceding goals. But lately we have been working on how to score goals because it is something that is missing lately,” said Zungu.

“Arrows have been performing well in the last few games and they won their last game against Richards Bay. They have some good players in the team and this is a game that we want to use to bring back that winning mentality in the team because we don’t really want to relax because we won the league already. We expect a really tough game and hopefully we win it,” he added.

While Sundowns have challenges of misfiring up front, Zungu has had his own demons as he is constantly battling injuries since he returned to the country last year.

“My wish is to be injury free and I am grateful that I got an opportunity against Swallows. I got injured in the Nedbank Cup and it has been a tough few weeks for me, but right now I am feeling good and fit and whenever the coach gives me a chance to play, my duty is to help the team whenever I can.

“My duty is to help the team whenever I can and we still have the Caf Champions League and Nedbank Cup to play for and we also want to win more games in the league. I just want to focus on that and whenever I get a chance I will grab it,” he said.

Even when injured, he lands a hand to the technical team to assist young players like of Siyabonga Mabena and Cassius Mailula, who need guidance from the senior players.

“I try my best to help the youngsters and the whole team to perform because when you play for Sundowns, the season is very long and we need everyone to perform at the highest level and to be switched on mentally. We have a lot of quality in the team and anyone can play and make the team win,” said the Sundowns midfielder.
