Zwane laments Chiefs’ second half performance in Stellies win

With a more dominant performance, Chiefs would have easily won by a bigger margin than the 2-1 scoreline.

It ended up being a narrow win when Kaizer Chiefs failed to boss a 10-man Stellenbosch FC at FNB Stadium on Saturday evening.

With a more dominant performance, Chiefs would have easily won by a bigger margin than the 2-1 scoreline.

Goal difference may determine the team who finish second to Mamelodi Sundowns in the DStv Premiership at the end of the season.

Chiefs are still fourth with 40 points, same as SuperSport United and Orlando Pirates above them but who are ahead of them because of goals difference.

“We started off very well, like we usually do. We put the opposition under pressure and forced them to commit mistakes,” said Zwane.

Chiefs were 1-0 ahead and Stellies were reduced to 10 men just 15 minutes into the game and Zwane’s side could have scored more.

Amakhosi found a second goal through Keagan Dolly later in the first half and went into the break with a clean lead to build on.

Dream start for Chiefs

“We got a penalty and in no time they were one man down. I believe we should have capitalised from that and scored at least four goals going into half time.

“But we were not ruthless enough in front of goal. At the break I told them that when a man is down, you give him a helping hand in real life.

“But in football you push them further down, you make sure he does not come back.

“I believe we had a chance to score four or five goals today and we didn’t capitalise on that,” added Zwane.

Not the best display in second half

Stellies got their hopes back at the start of the second half when they scored first and cut the lead in half.

“We started the second half very sloppy. And against the run of play, we gave them a goal.

“We didn’t shift across the passing lane to close the passing lane and make sure they don’t penetrate through the middle. That is their strength.

“From that moment we knew we would be under pressure. It was either we get a third goal quickly and kill the game off, or we play in a game where anything can happen.

“We ended up conceding unnecessary corners because of that… we were thinking anything can happen and the score will be 2-2.

“But we know we could have done better. We dropped in the second half. If we had started with the same energy as the first half, it could have been better.”

Chiefs’ next game is a league fixture against Marumo Gallants at FNB Stadium on Saturday.
