Police sergeant fatally shot in KaNyamazane
The SAPS officer was off duty when he was shot. The suspects are still at large.
A 41-year-old police sergeant, Nhlanhla Petros Segage (41), was fatally shot in KaNyamazane on Friday September 15.
According to a provincial police spokesperson, Colonel Donald Mdhluli, the sergeant was with some other people at a certain business premises in KaNyamazane.
“Two men are said to have arrived, fluently speaking Zulu, and they bought some bottled water. However, out of the blue, the two men reportedly drew firearms and blatantly shot at Sergeant Segage at close range. One of the people who were with him is said to have sustained some injuries after also being shot at as he was trying to run. There were no reported injuries to the others. Afterwards, the two suspects fled the scene in a vehicle, the model of which is yet to be determined,” he said.

Mdhluli said the police and paramedics responded to the call-out and rushed to the scene. The SAPS member’s body was found with multiple gunshot wounds. He was certified dead on the scene. Meanwhile, the other man who was injured during the incident was taken to hospital for medical treatment.
“A case of murder with an additional charge of attempted murder was opened. A manhunt for the suspects was launched. They are still at large.”
Mdhluli said the SAPS member was reportedly off-duty during the time of the incident. He was attached to Visible Policing under the Pienaar Police Station. The motive for the killing is unknown at this stage. The circumstances surrounding the incident will form part of the probe.
