Tommy Phiri appointed as acting CEO of North West Cricket

Tommy Phiri is a well-known face at North West Cricket having previously worked there in the position of Cricket Operations Manager from 2014-2018.

Tommy Phiri has been appointed as the acting CEO of North West Cricket today (Thursday, April 16) following the precautionary suspension of Mr Ismail Minty this past week.

The Board of Directors of North West Cricket (NWC), at a duly constituted special meeting, made the decision to appoint Phiri. This after Minty was precautionarily suspended. An independent investigation is currently taking place. North West Cricket refrained to comment regarding the nature of the investigation.

Phiri is a well-known face at North West Cricket having previously worked there in the position of Cricket Operations Manager from 2014-2018. After leaving North West Cricket, Phiri took on a new role as the CEO of Limpopo Impala Cricket from 2019 until 2024.

North West Cricket stated in a press release sent out this morning, that “the Board is confident that under his stewardship, NWC will continue to deliver on its mandate and serve its stakeholders effectively.”

“The Board assures all stakeholders that this leadership change will not disrupt the organisation’s operations, and that the internal process regarding the suspended CEO will be conducted with fairness, transparency, and due diligence,” added North West Cricket.

Commenting on his new position Phiri also stated that he is excited about the opportunity and challenge that comes with it.

“I am grateful for the confidence they have placed in me. Earlier today, I had the privilege of meeting the staff and I am encouraged by the strong sense of potential, experience, and enthusiasm within the team. I look forward to working closely with them as we continue to build and strengthen the organisation together.”

According to North West Cricket, Phiri is equipped with the core knowledge required within the cricket environment, with years of leadership experience in the sports sector.

“This includes a Master of Business Administration (MBA) qualification and a proven track record in strategic leadership, management, and operational excellence.”
