Jake White thrilled with form of David Kriel, as Bulls await return of Bok stars

Bulls utility back David Kriel showcased his class with a clinical performance against Zebre in the United Rugby Championship match in Parma on Saturday.
Kriel, who started the game in midfield alongside Stedman Gans, scored three tries as the Bulls defeated Zebre 54-29 to get their second win of the URC season. He was instrumental in midfield with the ball in hand and also set up Devon Williams for his first try.
Over the years, Kriel has played right across the backline, proving to be the ultimate utility player. His performances have not deteriorated despite playing in multiple positions.
With the Bulls having plenty of arsenal in the backs this season with Springboks Willie le Roux, Kurt-Lee Arendse and Canan Moodie in their ranks, opportunities in the backline will be limited.
Permanent position
Kriel though seems to have done enough to be an important figure for the Bulls in the eyes of the director of rugby, Jake White. After his stellar performance, White noted he has to find a permanent position for him in the team this season.
“Last year, I played him at 12 when Harold (Vorster) was injured, I know he can do a job there, and today he was outstanding. He’s versatile, he plays 12, 13, wing and fullback,” White said of Kriel.
“I obviously have to find a place for him because once we get Canan, Kurt-Lee and Willie back, then those positions are circled. It’s wonderful to see him playing at 12 because he gives us so many options when those Springboks come back.”
Returning Boks
White says the returning Rugby World Cup-winning Springboks Le Roux, Arendse, Moodie and flanker Marco van Staden will join the group when the team get back to Pretoria from their overseas tour.
“They have got a compulsory three-weeks off. When we get back (to Pretoria) they will join our squad, and if we have got momentum I might give them another week off,” White revealed.
“We can’t wait to get the energy of those Springboks (into our team); you can imagine coming back from winning the World Cup the kind of energy and enthusiasm they’ll bring to our squad.
“What’s also nice is that the guys that are playing in the positions that those players can play are playing well. It’s always nice as a coach when you have got so many opportunities to change your team around,” he said.
