DJ Maphorisa granted R4 000 bail as Thuli drops assault case

DJ Maphorisa's case has been remanded to 14 June for him to lodge representations to the NPA after the complainant filed a withdrawal statement.

Themba Sonnyboy Sekowe, affectionately known as DJ Maphorisa, was granted R4 000 bail by the Randburg Magistrates Court on Monday after his girlfriend, former Generations: The Legacy star Thuli Phongolo, dropped the assault case.

According to National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) spokesperson Phindi Mjonondwane on Sunday, the award-winning DJ allegedly hit his girlfriend with open hands and strangled her after she confronted him about an incident that happened the previous night where he was booked to perform.

Thuli laid a charge at the Sandton Police Station and was arrested Maphorisa immediately.

During proceedings, she then filed a withdrawal in which she agreed for the accused to be released on bail.

“The case was remanded to 14 June for Sekowe to lodge representations to the NPA in light of the withdrawal statement that has been filed by the complainant.”

City Press reported that the actress opened a case and shared the details of the incident in a statement seen by the publication.

“I confronted him so that we could talk about our argument that happened the previous night during his gig… He held me and took me to the balcony, and grabbed me aggressively by my neck,” Thuli said as quoted by the publication.

The paper also quoted a source that revealed this was not the first time the couple argued.

“They had a fight in early December after accusations of infidelity. They had another fight last month but it never got to the police station.”

Their relationship

Thuli has previously denied being in a relationship with the DJ. The pair sparked dating rumours in 2021 when a video of them dancing intimately made rounds on social media. As people continued to speculate that they were romantically involved, Thuli took to her Twitter page to shut down the rumours.

“Y’all stop. We’re not dating! I’m so done with you guys! And the truth remains, I’m single,” she wrote.

Previously, the actress has also been rumoured to be dating other DJs, including the Jerusalema hitmaker Master KG and Mr. Jazziq.

“I mean ‘respect me’ as in stop spreading baseless rumours! Hayibo nina, angisadlali!” she wrote denying Master KG‘s rumours.

The couple has been trending on Twitter since the assault news broke.

Fans shared mixed reactions on the timelines, many saying they hope Thuli gets justice while others continue to drag Maphorisa.

@Jabu_Macdonald said: “I am glad that Thuli Phongolo immediately went to the police 🤝if there’s evidence about these allegations then DJ Maphorisa is f*cked up and may have messed up his career.”
