Radio Awards recognise Sizwe Dhlomo for Drive-time show despite now being Kaya’s morning jock

Kaya FM has made some changes to its weekend and weekday line-up of presenters.


Despite the fact that he’s no longer steering the ship on Kaya FM’s drive time slot, Sizwe Dhlomo has been nominated at this year’s Radio Awards for the work he did when he still hosted the show.

Sizwe’s Kaya Drive is nominated for Best Commercial Afternoon Drive Show, alongside 947’s Thando ‘ThaBooty’ Thabethe, Metro FM’s Tbo Touch and 5FM’s Roger Goode show.

“The Radio Awards continue to celebrate excellence in the radio industry, recognising the outstanding achievements and contributions of radio stations and individuals. This year’s awards have garnered intense competition and showcased the remarkable talent within the industry,” read the statement on the awards’ website.

Kaya FM’s other notable nominees include mid-morning host Thabo Mokwele’s The Best T In The City –nominated for the Best Commercial Daytime Show and Andy Maqondwana’s and Feel Good daytime show is nominated for the combined Best Drama Programme award.

Gugulethu Mfuphi’s Kaya Biz got the nod for the combined Best Business and Finance show. With news readers Keneiloe Huma and Nosipho Radebe rounding up the station’s nominees in the Best Commercial News Bulletin Reader award.

Kaya FM will be disappointed for not being nominated in the Commercial Station of the Year, a category the station has dominated in the recent past.

Post recognition

In May, former breakfast show host Dineo Ranaka spoke openly about her struggles with depression, which led to the station giving her time off. Kaya FM released a statement supporting her sabbatical.

“Given this, we have made immediate changes to our line-up after Dineo Ranaka openly shared her struggles on social media,” averred the station in statement.

“Sizwe Dhlomo will now stand in on 959 Breakfast from 06h00 – 09h00 every weekday morning. Sizwe will be joined by Sol Phenduka on traffic, as well as the news and sports team.“

The statement further confirmed that Thomas Msengana and Skhumba Hlophe would fill in for Sizwe in the Afternoon Drive from 15h00 – 18h00. The station still describes Sizwe’s presence in the morning slot as a stand-in.

Shaking things up

Kaya FM has announced changes to its weekend and early morning weekday line-up which will see Kgomotso Meso move from Early Breakfast on weekdays to take over the Weekend Breakfast show from 06h00-09h00.

Media personality MaBlerh will take over the weekday morning from 05h00 – 06h00.

“We are thrilled to welcome our esteemed presenters into their new time slots,” said Kaya’s MD Colleen Louw in a statement.

Kaya FM bid farewell to Sammy T and Mo and Phindi. The station is yet to name a replacement for the duo who hosted the Sunday 09h00–12h00 show.
