The EFF was formed after its firebrand leader Julius Malema was expelled from the ANC. Known as the ‘Red Berets’, the party puts forward leftist and anti-capitalist ideas, such as the nationalisation of South Africa’s banks and mines as well as the expropriation of land. The EFF quickly gained support, especially from the country’s poor and young people that are desperate for an alternative.
