Orlando Pirates' players have finally found their scoring boots and proved their sharpness in front of goal when they routed Jomo Cosmos 5-0 in an Absa Premiership match at Orlando Stadium on Saturday night.

Decrying missed chances by Bucs coach Eric Tinkler had become common after every game. But after the Cosmos thrashing, Tinkler sported a huge smile as he praised his players for their clinical finishing.

“The first half performance was really good and with the chances that we created we put the ball in the back of the net. That’s what was important and I explained it to the players before the game.”

Pirates’ first goal came from an unlikely source as central defender Ayanda Gcaba found himself through on goal with only the goalkeeper to beat. He hit the ball impressively with his weaker right foot and it sailed past Ezenkosi keeper Sherwyn Naicker into the net.

Sifiso Myeni, Mpho Makola and Tendai Ndoro followed suit with a goal each as Pirates went into the half-time break with a 4-0 lead.

Second-half substitute Gift Mothupa added his name to the scorers list with a goal in the latter stages of the game to complete the 5-0 drubbing.

Cosmos’ misery started when defender Cheslyn Jampies was red-carded for a dangerous tackle after Gcaba opened the scoring with just over 10 minutes on the clock.

The loss saw Cosmos slipping to second from bottom on the league standings, only two points above Maritzburg United.
