A former Kaizer Chiefs player and a Safa coaches’ instructor are among the people who allegedly assaulted a referee in an ABC Motsepe League match in Mpumalanga last weekend.

A video of TS Galaxy officials and players attacking a referee has been widely spread on social media this week.

A source who asked not to be named as he works for the South African Football Coaches’ Association (Safca), has revealed to Phakaaathi that the duo of former Amakhosi defender Muisi Ajao and former Maritzburg United striker Obinna Okafor are co-coaches at ABC Motsepe team TS Galaxy and were part of the attack on the match officials.

“Ajao is the one who can be seen in the video attacking the referee and later being restrained. He is wearing a red T-shirt, cargo shorts and a red cap and Obinna is in a red T-shirt and navy shorts.

“What is baffling is that Okafor claims to be a Safa instructor, and for him to do something like this is sending the wrong message to aspiring coaches,” said the source.

Efforts to get hold of Okafor didn’t bear any fruit as his phone at first rang unanswered and was later unavailable.
