Jukebox Thursday: AKA’s Composure and other diss tracks

Hlabangani Mtshali

Twitter and the internet damn near broke yesterday after AKA released Composure – a song where he takes shots at fellow rappers Cassper Nyovest, Anatii and Ricky Rick.

AKA performs at the DSTV iRock Music Festival in Port Elizabeth, 04 April 2015. The event hosted some of South Africa's biggest acts including AKA, Thandiswa Mazwai, Beatenburg and many others. Picture: Refilwe Modise

The five-plus-minute barrage of bars marked the first time AKA has taken his much-publicised beef with Cassper Nyovest and his tiffs with the other rappers off Twitter and into the studio.

AKA’s Composure is the perfect example of one of the most exciting aspects of hip-hop music – the battle (as long as it remains purely lyrical and no one gets hurt or killed).

Here rappers go against each other in a no-holds-barred exchange of verbal taunts. Sometimes participants remain civil and only spar out their differences, but most times they get really personal when launching their attacks – and it is marvellous to witness.

So, in this week’s edition of #JukeBoxThursday we take a look, in no particular order, at AKA’s Composure along other diss tracks from recent times.
