Chiefs players to fight for Komphela

Kaizer Chiefs captain Siphiwe Tshabalala hasn’t lost hope in Steve Komphela leading the Amakhosi to glory.

Speaking ahead of Saturday’s Soweto derby against Orlando Pirates, Tshabalala said Komphela needs to be given a chance to implement his philosophy at Chiefs.

Chiefs have lost twice so far this season – against Ajax Cape Town in the MTN8 final and Orlando Pirates in the league – but some Chiefs supporters are calling for Komphela’s sacking already.

“He is a quality coach. I think he must be given a chance. It’s his first season and it’s only been three months. We were in the MTN 8 final, we lost the final, and we are in the top five in the league and lost only once,” explained Tshabalala. “We need to give him an opportunity and support.”

The dreadlocked midfield conductor didn’t place the responsibility of steering the Amakhosi ship to calm waters firmly on Komphela’s shoulders.

“As players we need to fight for him and fight for this badge and for ourselves as well, we will play for our coach and show everyone that he is the best and he deserves to be the coach of Kaizer Chiefs.”

Meanwhile, Tshabalala said Chiefs will not go into Saturday’s Soweto derby sequel looking for revenge.

“We cannot go into Saturday’s game with revenge at the back of our minds or not wanting to lose. This is a game that requires mental and physical strength.”
